We are upgrading the pavilion at Highfield Park to provide a high-quality facility for our community and sports clubs.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on the draft design for the new pavilion. Community consultation closed on 19 March 2024.

We'll now review your feedback and the design, ready to share with you later this year.

About the upgrade

The current pavilion building is in poor condition and does not have female-friendly change rooms, toilets and showers.

We have developed a draft design for the pavilion that is accessible, has improved functionality and creates a better connection between the north and south ovals.

Key features include:

  • 4 unisex change rooms with toilets and showers
  • 2 umpires’ rooms
  • an accessible public toilet that can be accessed externally by the community
  • a first aid room
  • external building and path lighting to improve safety
  • flexible multi-purpose space with storage
  • kitchen/kiosk with internal and external counter for serving food
  • a sheltered viewing area at the front of the pavilion
  • a ramp to improve access to the pavilion
  • accessible car parks
  • solar PV system.

Car park lighting may be installed later, subject to funding.

The budget for this upgrade is $5.6 million.

What is changing?

We are proposing a split-level building to accommodate key features such as the unisex change rooms, umpires’ rooms, and accessible public toilet.

The draft design shows the lower level sitting in line with the southern oval, and the upper level sitting at road level with Wyclif Drive, facing the northern oval.

The proposed building height is 3.5m. This is an increase of approximately 2m from the existing building height.

The width of the building would also increase slightly. However, it will not expand onto either of the ovals. One of the cricket nets will be relocated to the east side of the existing nets to accommodate this.

Tree removal

We have developed a draft design which has the lowest impact possible on the surrounding trees. We are able to retain 16 out of 18 trees, including 4 significant trees with high retention value.

We would need to remove two West Australian Willow Myrtle trees to accommodate the increased size of the pavilion. While these two trees were assessed by an arborist to be of moderate arboriculture value, we are not able to provide enough clearance around these trees with the extension of the pavilion and new pedestrian pathway required. We will offset their removal by planting new trees on the site.
