Boroondara Bicycle Strategy 2022

Our Boroondara Bicycle Strategy is our plan for the next 10 years to:

  • improve bicycle infrastructure
  • increase and support the number of people using bicycles to travel.

Our aim is to deliver an integrated bicycle network that is:

  • safe
  • connected
  • protected
  • works well
  • appeals to bicycle users of all ages and abilities.

The proposed bicycle network includes new and improved off-road paths and on-road connections, which provide access to a range of destinations. This helps make riding an attractive and possible option for all residents, workers and visitors to the City of Boroondara.

We welcomed feedback on the draft Boroondara Bicycle Strategy between December 2021 and February 2022. Council formally adopted the final Boroondara Bicycle Strategy on Monday 11 July 2022 at the Services Delegated Committee Meeting.

Our guiding principles

  • A connected and complete bicycle network.

  • A safe bicycle riding experience.

  • Integrated supporting facilities and amenities.

  • Awareness and education.

Our work so far

We developed the Boroondara Bicycle Strategy after extensive community engagement, research and analysis.

Between November 2019 and March 2020, we had:

  • stakeholder workshops
  • interviews with diverse members of the community
  • community surveys (online and in writing)
  • written submissions.

We also looked at the transport infrastructure projects completed over the last 10 years and the needs of cyclists. We understand that these needs change as the population grows. We also understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many people travel.

Between mid-December 2021 and end of February 2022 we sought community feedback on the draft Boroondara Bicycle Strategy and supporting draft Implementation Plan.

What we heard

Community members shared a range of views to help shape the Boroondara Bicycle Strategy, including:

Implementation Plan

The Boroondara Bicycle Strategy recommends a number of initiatives and actions to:

  • improve infrastructure across the bicycle network
  • provide a connected and safe bicycle network throughout Boroondara.

We will look at these initiatives and actions and implement them in 2-year stages. We will develop a new Implementation Plan at each stage to make sure we keep delivering on the strategy's vision over the next 10 years.

The first Implementation Plan has information about each of the initiatives and actions for the next two financial years - 2022/23 and 2023/24.

It includes:

  • the estimated cost to Council
  • how we will deliver each action and initiative
  • who the key stakeholders are.

Have your say

The survey closed at midnight Monday 28 February 2022.
